Bernoulli's Principle Animation

Posted on 10th February, 2012 by Chaz

Interactive animation shows how pressure and velocity in a fluid behave according to Bernoulli's Principle.
Pressure, and it is directed downstream. The static pressure decreases when the speed increases, as explained in the Background Theory section above. This explains why the water stream coming out of a firefighter& ,s hose gets narrower a short distance past the nozzle - the stronger atmospheric pressure overwhelms the weaker static pressure in the quickly flowing water and compresses the water stream. At the bottom of a swimming pool, the force on your body is from the static pressure of the

Convection in a box.

Experiments with smoke inside a plexiglass box challenge convectional wisdom. Smoke can unexpectedly act heavier than air and then spontaneously reverse.
More successful was a simple 4 square by 3 4 deep hollow plexiglas box (gluing together pieces of 1 8 plex). Openings were provided on the top or bottom as needed and smoke from a cigarette or incense stick was introduced. The image at the left shows smoke filling the bottom half of the container, and then a pulse of clear air rising through the smoke pool from a momentary opening at the bottom..hese and a other examples are displayed and discussed in more detail.
